Uganda Driving Tips To Keep You Safe On The Road

Is it your first time driving on a Ugandan road or you have done it before, whichever case it is, you should put in mind Uganda has its own set of traffic rules you have to adhere to when driving to avoid getting into problems like car accidents or police fines? Stay on the left side of the road – Most of the cars driven in Uganda are right-hand drive cars and the Uganda traffic laws state that every car should drive on the left side of the road not right hand as you risk colliding with oncoming traffic. So always stay left no matter which road you are driving on in Uganda.

Don’t drive while on phone – A phone is one of the major distractions when driving and can easily lead to accidents which could cost you lives or money. So word of advice is to put away the phone or use a blue tooth piece when driving.

Fasten your seat belt – Avoid getting on the wrong side of the traffic law by always putting on your seat belt, it’s a precaution that will save your life in case of a major accident so always en-devour to put the seat belt and also tell all the passengers to do the same.

Don’t over speed – Over 80% of road accidents in Uganda have been caused by overspeeding cars and it has left many lives devastated. So be wise and drive carefully to save lives and money. Always obey speed limit signs on every road you enter and there won’t be any problem.

Avoid driving under the influence – Do drive when drunk unless you want to kill yourself and your passengers. Alcohol affects a person’s judgment and steadiness so if you are feeling tipsy, don’t get behind the wheel otherwise you risk getting an accident or falling prey to the police officers who will impound your car or even arrest you depending on the level of alcohol you had.

Driver permits – It’s strictly prohibited to drive in Uganda or any country for that matter without a valid driver permit otherwise you risk your car getting impounded. If you are a foreigner, you will require a valid international driver’s license or an authorization document to let you drive on Ugandan roads.

Don’t park anywhere – Avoid parking anywhere you find as you risk your car getting impounded or even worse stolen or vandalized . Look for spots that allow parking for a fee and avoid extra unwanted expenses.

Obey the traffic signs – Last but not least, strongly follow the traffic signs straight from the lights to poster signs. Important traffics signs to follow when driving in Uganda include traffic lights, stop, speed limit , sharp turn ahead, zebra crossing, no parking among others.

TIP – Whenever you are caught in the wrong by the traffic officers, don’t argue with them but instead apologize, sometimes they are understanding and could let you off with a warning or small fine.
